Putin Highlights the Importance of Turkic Heritage in Russia's Historical Legacy

08 October

Research into Turkic cultural monuments underscores the special role of Altai in the history of Turkic peoples. Their distinctive way of life forms an essential part of Russia's historical heritage, President Vladimir Putin said.

“Recent discoveries by our scholars and archaeologists have unveiled unique monuments of Turkic writing, spiritual and material culture, which highlight the special role of Altai for the Turkic peoples,” Putin stated in a message read by his assistant, Vladimir Medinsky, at the international conference “The Altai Mountains: The Homeland of the Turks. The History of Turkic Civilization.” He further emphasized, “The languages, traditions, and unique way of life of Turkic peoples are an important part of Russia's historical legacy as a unique civilizational state.”

Putin also remarked that the Eurasian continent is “rightly considered the cradle of many ancient civilizations, including the Turkic civilization,” and pointed out that the extensive mountain system of Altai is the historical homeland of the Turkic peoples.

He expressed confidence that the forum, which brings together experts from Russia and other countries, would foster “constructive discussions” on key issues of Altai studies. “I am sure that during these open and constructive discussions, you will be able to address a wide range of important issues in Turkic studies at a high expert level, offering new ideas and approaches to studying little-known pages of world history.”

The first international scientific-practical conference “The Altai Mountains: The Homeland of the Turks. The History of Turkic Civilization” is being held on October 8-9 in Manzherok, Republic of Altai. The event will feature a series of discussions on the history of the Turkic peoples, their interactions with Slavic peoples, as well as their culture and writing systems.

The conference is organized by the Russian Military-Historical Society, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Knowledge Society, and the Russian Historical Society, with support from the government of the Republic of Altai.
