Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that preserving interethnic peace and harmony is essential for Russia’s sovereign progress. His message was addressed to the participants, organizers, and guests of the 16th Congress of Russian Anthropologists and Ethnologists, currently taking place in Perm.
“We deeply value our rich historical and spiritual heritage, as well as the friendly ties among people of different religions and cultures — a legacy passed down through generations,” the president said in a message published on the Kremlin’s website. “I firmly believe that the cornerstone of Russia’s steady and independent development lies in safeguarding interethnic peace and traditional values.”
Putin noted that the congress has long enjoyed high esteem, regularly bringing together leading researchers, university professors, and representatives from relevant ministries and agencies. The forum addresses critical questions related to advancing the national academic tradition in anthropology and ethnology and to training skilled professionals in these fields.
The president also stressed the importance of fostering constructive dialogue between government institutions and civil society. According to him, large-scale initiatives like the Perm congress play a vital role in strengthening that cooperation.
This year’s event coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Komi-Permyak District of Perm Krai and the 180th anniversary of the Ethnographic Commission of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society. The program includes seven roundtables and 62 discussion panels.
