Case of armed rebellion by Basayev's gang in Dagestan was sent to court

The RF Prosecutor General's Office has forwarded to the Southern District Military Court the criminal case of participants in an armed mutiny by Shamil Basayev's gang in the territory of Dagestan in 1999, the website of the Prosecutor General's Office says.


"The General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation approved the indictment of the criminal case against the natives of the Neftekumsk district of Stavropol Krai. They are accused of committing crimes under Part 2 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code ("Participation in a gang"), Article 279 of the Criminal Code ("Banditry"), Article 317 of the Criminal Code ("Encroachment on the life of a law enforcement officer"). The criminal case was sent to the Southern Military District Court for examination on the merits," said the report.


According to the investigation, in August of 1999, the accused took part in an armed attack on members of the Russian Armed Forces in the Botlikhsky district of Dagestan as members of a gang under the general leadership of Basayev and Khattab, which resulted in 33 deaths and 34 wounded. The accused are currently in custody.


The defendants in the case are Surtlanbek Adzhinyazov and Ruslanbek Arslanov, according to the website of the Investigative Committee of Russia. It's noted that earlier more than 80 participants of the attack on the Botlikhsky and Tsumadinsky districts of Dagestan were sentenced to long terms of imprisonment. The involvement of a number of other individuals in the commission of crimes by the gang is being verified, and the investigation of the case continues. For committing crimes as members of a gang headed by Basayev and Khattab, 28 people were put on the federal and international wanted list.
