Putin Directs Allocation of Minimum 5 Billion Rubles for Derbent's Development

14 August 2023

Russian President Vladimir Putin has directed the allocation of a minimum of 5 billion rubles from the federal budget between 2024 and 2026 for the implementation of initiatives aimed at advancing the development of Derbent in Dagestan. This directive is part of the instructions outlined subsequent to a meeting concerning the enhancement of tourism within the North Caucasus Federal District, and the details have been made available on the Kremlin's official website.

"[To] allocate an additional amount of no less than 5 billion rubles from the federal budget to the budget of the Republic of Dagestan between 2024 and 2026 for the purpose of implementing measures to foster the development of Derbent," the statement reads.

Furthermore, Putin directed the government, in collaboration with the executive authorities of the republic, to ensure the update of the action plan for comprehensive regional development until 2027. The comprehensive report is expected to be submitted by December 15.

On June 29, Putin conducted a visit to Derbent, during which he met with the local residents. A particular moment that garnered attention was a video of a young girl who had the opportunity to be in close proximity to the head of state and take a photo with him. Subsequently, media coverage highlighted the response of another child, Raisat Akipova, who was visibly upset as she couldn't communicate with the president directly, only being able to observe him from a distance. Learning of this, the president extended an invitation to Raisat and her parents to visit the Kremlin. On July 4, the eight-year-old had the chance to visit Putin's office, during which the president and his young guest contacted Anton Siluanov, the Minister of Finance. It was during this interaction that Siluanov conveyed the decision to allocate 5 billion rubles for the development of Dagestan.
