Aksenov: the incident with the British destroyer showed that Crimea is an impregnable fortress

24 June 2021

The incident with the British destroyer, which on Wednesday afternoon entered Russian territorial waters and was forced to turn back thanks to the actions of the Black Sea Fleet and the Russian border service, proved that Crimea is an impregnable fortress. This opinion was expressed to TASS by the head of the Republic of Crimea Sergey Aksenov.

"They did the right thing, the warning lines were. Made it clear that Crimea is a fortress. The borders of Russia are under lock and key. We understand that the Armed Forces and the Federal Security Service of Russia in the Republic of Crimea - all are ready to carry out the tasks," Aksenov said.

On Wednesday, the Black Sea Fleet, together with the Border Guard Service of the Russian Federal Security Service, stopped the British Navy destroyer Defender from violating the Russian state border near Cape Fiolent. The border patrol ship carried out warning firing and the Su-24M bomber carried out warning bombing, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier on Wednesday that the Black Sea Fleet, together with the Border Guard Service of the Russian Federal Security Service, stopped the British Navy destroyer Defender from violating the state border near Cape Fiolent. The destroyer entered territorial waters for three kilometers. The Border Patrol ship fired warning shots and the Su-24M bomber performed warning bombing raids along the course of the destroyer, after which the Defender left the Russian territorial waters. The Defense Ministry treated the actions of the British destroyer as a gross violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and called on the British side to investigate the actions of the ship's crew.
