Criminal case opened in Tatarstan after explosion in an apartment house

Investigators have opened a criminal case for causing death by negligence in a gas explosion in an apartment building in Tatarstan on Monday night, the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Republic said.


"A criminal case has been opened under Article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Causing death by negligence")," the report reads.


"The investigation establishes the exact number of dead and injured as a result of the accident, various versions of what happened are being considered, the main one being a domestic gas leak," the report says.


At present, investigators and criminologists of the Investigative Department are working at the scene, a number of examinations are appointed, the victims, witnesses, residents of the house are being interrogated and other necessary investigative actions are conducted to establish all the circumstances of the incident.


On Monday there was a gas explosion in an apartment building in Zelenodolsk in Tatarstan. According to preliminary data, seven apartments on two floors collapsed. A man's body was found under the rubble and six more people were injured. More than 90 people were evacuated, according to an emergency services source.


"One [person] died on the spot, five were hospitalized (one woman in serious condition, the rest in moderate condition, no life-threatening), one was treated on the spot. No minors were injured," the press service of Tatarstan's Health Ministry told TASS.
