Mufti of Tatarstan Opposes Ban on Religious Clothing in Educational Institutions

09 July

Mufti of Tatarstan Kamil Samigullin has opposed the initiative to restrict the wearing of religious clothing in public places and educational organizations, describing it as an infringement on constitutional rights. He shared his stance on his Telegram channel.

"I join the position of the Coordination Center of Muslims of the North Caucasus and, on behalf of the Muslims of Tatarstan and the Religious Board of Muslims of the Republic of Tatarstan (DUM RT), I express full solidarity with the statement against the legislative initiative to restrict the wearing of religious clothing in public places and educational organizations in Russia. At a time when Muslim fighters are shedding blood in the special military operation zone for their homeland, their national and religious traditions, and the shared spiritual values of the peoples of Russia, in the rear, their women are being legislatively deprived of their constitutional rights and forbidden to cover themselves," Samigullin wrote.

He emphasized that achieving and maintaining interethnic harmony in society should not come at the expense of infringing on the rights of others. "Today, practicing one's religion and observing its tenets is a constitutional right of Russian citizens. And for a woman to be covered is a command of the Almighty, which Muslims will not violate under any circumstances or threats," the mufti added.

The initiative to allow educational organizations to impose a ban for security reasons was proposed by Deputy Vladislav Davankov. The Coordination Center of Muslims of the North Caucasus has appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin and State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, urging them not to allow the ban on religious clothing in educational institutions.
