31 May 2021

Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in the launch of the Aurus car plant in Tatarstan via video link, press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.

"Today from Sochi, the president will take part in the opening of the Aurus plant," he said, recalling that the president has been driving this car for several years.

Peskov added that almost the entire Russian government has also "switched" to Aurus. "Almost all the cars are being used more and more, commercial use begins gradually. And just today the plant opens in Tatarstan. The president will take part by video conference," the Kremlin spokesman added.

According to Peskov, the Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov, the President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, the General Director of Rostekh Sergey Chemezov and the General Director of Aurus Adil Shirinov will also take part in the ceremony.

About the plant

On Monday, the Ford Sollers plant in Elabuga (Tatarstan) will start the serial production of Russian luxury cars Aurus Senat. The minimum price of the car will be 18 million rubles. The capacity of the plant is designed to produce up to 5 thousand cars per year. As Manturov noted it is planned to reach that level by 2024-2025.

It is planned that the plant in Elabuga will also produce the Aurus Komendant SUV. The car was supposed to be presented at the motor show in Moscow in 2020, but the event was canceled because of the pandemic.

Aurus is the first Russian premium car brand created "from scratch" by NAMI specialists. Special versions of Aurus cars are used in the FSO special-purpose garage for trips of the prime minister and the president of the Russian Federation. The shareholders of Aurus are FGUP "NAMI" (63,5%), the UAE Defense, Security and Development Fund Tawazun (36%) and Sollers (0,5%).
