The Assembly of Peoples of Tatarstan was granted consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council. This will open, among other things, opportunities to promote the traditional values of the peoples of Russia, the press service of the State Council of Tatarstan told TASS on Tuesday.

"The Assembly of Peoples of Tatarstan has been granted consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Experts of the world organization noted that the experience accumulated by the Assembly, including in the field of interaction with state and municipal authorities, with youth organizations, is in demand on the platform of the UN," the press service reported.

Speaker of the Parliament of the republic, Chairman of the Council of the Assembly of Peoples of Tatarstan Farid Mukhametshin noted that it gives an opportunity to exchange experience of Russian regions in implementation of the state national policy, as well as to promote traditional values of the peoples of the Russian Federation. "A new platform for interaction with foreign colleagues has opened for our republic and the country as a whole. And we will do our best to be heard," the press service quotes Mukhametshin as saying.

He stressed that the experience of the Assembly of Peoples of Tatarstan arouses interest on the part of foreign countries. "At numerous meetings with international delegations, we have repeatedly received proposals to apply for consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council," said Mukhametshin.

Consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council is granted to non-governmental organizations whose expertise and experience can be demanded in the global community and applied in the UN member states.

Non-governmental organizations with such status work in various fields, including education, health care, poverty eradication, human rights, gender equality, preservation and development of cultures and traditions of peoples, etc.

Consultative status is a formal confirmation of the relationship between non-governmental organizations and the United Nations, allowing NGOs to participate in the work of the UN.
