Akkuyu NPP Nears Commissioning of Its First Reactor Unit

15 September

Work at Turkey’s Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is progressing according to schedule and approaching the stage where the first reactor unit will be put into operation, said Akkuyu Nuclear CEO Sergey Butskikh.

“We are now conducting start-up and adjustment operations. At this stage, all equipment and systems are undergoing testing and checks for operational readiness. Preparations for safe operation are underway. Once these start-up works are finished on the first unit, we will begin commissioning,” Butskikh told TRT.

Work is simultaneously ongoing at all four reactor units. The second unit is also on schedule, moving into a critical phase that includes welding its main circulation pipeline—a key step for coolant safety. Near-term plans include assembling and concreting the containment dome, while installation of turbine hall equipment is also active.

Once individual nodes and safety systems for the first unit are verified, fresh nuclear fuel will be loaded, followed by physical commissioning and a controlled initial power-up. “When the reactor reaches nominal capacity, the turbine will run, all operation modes checked, and the plant will transition to energy production and the start of commercial operations,” he said.
