The first phase of Russian gas supplies to Iran will begin in a few months, and a Russian delegation will arrive in Tehran shortly to discuss pricing, Iran’s Ambassador in Moscow Kazem Jalali said.
“Representatives of Russia’s energy sector will visit Tehran next week to finalize talks on importing gas from Russia,” the Tasnim agency quoted him as saying.
Jalali noted that all issues except price have already been resolved. According to him, the first phase will start “in a few months, but the second and third will require infrastructure.” “It was decided that Russia will invest in building the infrastructure,” the ambassador added.
In January, Russia’s Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev said Moscow and Tehran had agreed on a pipeline route to Iran via Azerbaijan, with talks in the final stage on pricing. Initial deliveries could reach up to 2 billion cubic meters, with the prospect of increasing to 55 billion cubic meters. In August, in an interview with TASS, Ambassador Jalali expressed hope that supplies of Russian gas to the Islamic Republic via Azerbaijan would begin soon, stressing that almost all issues with Gazprom had been resolved.
