Direct Flights Between Russia and Saudi Arabia Could Resume Soon

28 April

Direct air travel between Russia and Saudi Arabia could soon resume, according to the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office. The update came after a meeting in Moscow between Russia’s Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov and his Saudi counterpart, Saud bin Abdullah Al-Muajeb.

Krasnov noted that the issue had been discussed six months ago during talks in Rio de Janeiro but remains unresolved. "Right now, traveling from Moscow to Riyadh takes far longer than it should, which hampers tourism and slows down investment between our countries. I believe we can play a role in helping to remove these barriers," he said, according to the official statement.

In response, Al-Muajeb assured that progress is being made and that a final resolution is close.

Talks between the two prosecutors last year at the inaugural G20 Prosecutors General Summit in Rio had already identified two airlines — Russia’s Red Wings and Saudi Arabia’s Flynas — as ready to launch direct flights. However, the final hurdle has been the lack of guarantees from the Saudi side regarding the non-seizure of aircraft under third-party sanctions requests.
