Iran and Russia Sign $25 Billion Agreement to Build NPP

26 September

Iran and Russia have signed a $25 billion agreement for the construction of the Hormoz Nuclear Power Plant in the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan, according to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) and reports from IRNA.

The agreement was signed by Naser Mansur Shariflu from the Iranian company Iran Hormoz and Dmitry Shiganov representing AO Rosatom Energetic Projects from Russia.

The nuclear power plant will consist of four power units and will span an area of 500 hectares. Currently, engineering surveys are underway, and some site preparation work has begun.

This project was initiated in February 2024 when then-President Ebrahim Raisi, along with AEOI GHad Mohammad Eslami, ordered the start of construction in the Hormozgan province near the cities of Minab and Sirik. The plant is planned to have a total capacity of 5,000 MW.

On September 25, AEOI chief Eslami announced that the project would soon enter its next phase, highlighting it as one of the most important steps in achieving the goals set out in Iran’s nuclear industry development strategy.
