Japarov: Kyrgyzstan Cannot Forego Economic Cooperation with Russia

24 September

Kyrgyzstan, despite the threat of sanctions, cannot abandon its economic ties with Russia, President Sadyr Japarov declared at the general policy debate of the 80th UN General Assembly session.

Addressing Western nations, Japarov remarked: “You demand that we stop cooperating with Russia, yet you yourselves actively expand trade and economic relations with it. Our country has far deeper economic ties with Russia than you do. Therefore, economically, we cannot withdraw from cooperation with Russia.”

Japarov emphasized that recent sanctions imposed by Western states against certain Kyrgyz companies and banks are “based on false information” circulated by some non-governmental organizations and unscrupulous individuals. He assured that Kyrgyz authorities are prepared “to accept independent international audits for thorough verification of the activities of Kyrgyzstan’s banks.”

“In 2024, EU countries traded $141 billion with Russia, of which $36 billion was imports from Russia,” Japarov noted. “Meanwhile, the UK, which imposed sanctions against two of our banks, traded $2.2 billion with Russia in the same year.” Thus, “some retain opportunities to cooperate with Russia for their own benefit, while prohibiting others”—the Kyrgyz president concluded, highlighting the double standards at play.
