29 March 2022

On Tuesday, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a law on ratification of the agreement on transboundary movement of hazardous waste through the customs territory of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). This was reported by the press service of the head of state.

The agreement was signed by the heads of government of the EEU member states in August 2019 in Cholpon-Ata. The document regulates relations related to the transboundary movement of hazardous waste to which non-tariff regulation measures are applied in trade with third countries, through the customs territory of the EEU in the implementation of mutual trade of the Union countries.

The document will define a uniform procedure for the movement of hazardous waste between the states of the EEU, to ensure the interaction of the authorized bodies of the Union's countries to exchange information about the conclusions issued and violations identified in such shipments on the customs territory of the union. In addition, the agreement is designed to ensure environmentally sound disposal and recycling of waste, preventing environmental pollution.
