Kyrgyzstan and Inter RAO Explore Construction of 500 MW Thermal Power Plant

25 September

Kyrgyzstan and Inter RAO are discussing the potential construction of a thermal power plant (TPP) with a capacity of 500 megawatts, Deputy Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan Altynbek Rysbekov stated during the World Atomic Week in Moscow.

“The question of building a TPP, with a planned capacity of 500 MW, is being considered in partnership with Inter RAO Export,” Rysbekov said. He specified that the proposed location for the power plant is in the Chaldovar area, approximately 100 kilometers from Bishkek.

Negotiations with Inter RAO Export regarding their participation in the project have just begun. The Russian company may act as the project contractor and potentially hold a stake in the venture, Rysbekov indicated.

“We are still in discussions, including on investments — talks have only recently started, so no concrete details are available yet, but negotiations are underway,” the deputy minister explained.

Rysbekov highlighted that Kyrgyzstan is currently experiencing an electricity deficit, with 90% of its power generated by hydroelectric stations. Large-scale projects to modernize these hydro plants are underway and expected to boost production by around 2027. Additionally, Kyrgyzstan is considering building several thermal power plants and implementing renewable energy projects.

The government is also studying potential sites for nuclear power generation in collaboration with Rosatom.
