Malaysia Explores Trade with Russia and Brazil Amid US Tariffs

07 May

Malaysia is actively exploring new trade opportunities with Russia and Brazil in response to recently imposed US tariffs, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.

"The government is taking a cautious and measured approach in dealing with the US tariff issue... At the same time, Malaysia is looking into expanding trade ties with Russia and Brazil, both of which have rapidly growing economies. This is part of our broader effort to diversify export markets," Anwar wrote on X.

He noted that this strategy aligns with Malaysia’s broader economic policy aimed at strengthening global trade resilience and boosting foreign direct investment.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz earlier announced that the Malaysian prime minister plans to visit Russia soon.

On April 2, US President Donald Trump unveiled a sweeping tariff package affecting imports from 185 countries and territories. A flat 10% duty came into effect on April 5, followed by country-specific rates on April 9. Among the hardest-hit were ASEAN nations, with Cambodia (49%), Laos (48%), Vietnam (46%), Thailand (36%), Indonesia (32%), and Malaysia (24%) facing some of the steepest tariffs.
