Moscow and Islamabad Discuss Introducing Russia’s Mir Payment System in Pakistan

24 December 2024

Russia and Pakistan are in talks to potentially launch the Russian payment system Mir in Pakistan, according to Pakistani Energy Minister Awais Leghari.

“The Intergovernmental Commission has identified the payment mechanism as a top priority. This is something that needs to be developed to enable further progress. For us, it is vital to discuss and formalize how the implementation of [the Mir payment system] in our trade and economic cooperation can elevate us to a new level,” Leghari said in an interview with TASS when asked about the proposal.

On December 4, the Russia-Pakistan Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation held its latest meeting. The discussions covered a range of topics, including the establishment of direct air links, the construction of hydroelectric power plants in Pakistan, and the possibility of increasing oil supplies to the country.
