26 November 2021

Construction of the Pakistan Stream gas pipeline will cost $3.5 billion, Pakistani Economy Minister Omar Ayub Khan said.

"The Pakistan-Russia Pakistan Stream pipeline is a key project that will cost $3.5 billion, and it will be of great significance for both Pakistan and Russia in terms of investment," the Pakistani minister said.

"Pakistan Stream, originally named North-South, is to link the liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure in the ports of Karachi and Gwadar in the south of Pakistan with power plants and industrial gas consumers in Kasur district (Punjab) in the north. Its length under the project will be more than 1,100 kilometers, with a throughput capacity of up to 12.3 billion cubic meters per year, but, as Russian Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov said earlier on Friday, this capacity will be higher - 16 billion.

The intergovernmental agreement between Russia and Pakistan on the implementation of the gas pipeline project was signed in October 2015 and provides for the use of Russian materials, technology and services.
