Pakistan Looks to Build Steel Plant in Karachi With Russian Help

09 July

Islamabad is interested in working with Moscow to build a steel plant in Karachi, Pakistan’s Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Industry, Haroon Akhtar Khan, told TASS.

“We haven’t signed anything yet, but we’re talking about a steel plant — a facility with a capacity of 1 million tons, originally built by the Russians in Pakistan back in the early 1980s,” he said. “That plant has since shut down, and we’d like to resume or renew industrial cooperation with Russia, either to restore the old plant or build a new one.”

Khan noted that a preliminary feasibility study is already in place. “I’m here in Russia to discuss the signing of an agreement on the technical and commercial feasibility study, which would pave the way for a full contract,” he explained. “We’ve already been working with a Russian company for about three months, and we’ve achieved good results so far.”
