Putin Highlights Over 40% Growth in Russia-Malaysia Trade During First Five Months

06 August

The bilateral trade turnover between Russia and Malaysia has seen strong growth, rising by more than 40% from January to May 2025. Russian President Vladimir Putin made this announcement while opening talks at the Kremlin with Malaysia’s Supreme Ruler Sultan Ibrahim ibni Iskandar.

“Trade between our countries is expanding at a very healthy pace,” Putin noted. “The increase of over 40% in the first five months is a very encouraging sign.”

Putin also pointed to the ongoing collaboration between Russia and Malaysia on various international platforms, particularly within the United Nations. “It is well known that one of Russia’s foreign policy priorities in Asia is developing dialogue with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which Malaysia is chairing this year,” Putin said. “We appreciate, Your Majesty, that Malaysia not only supports our bilateral relations but also helps deepen our engagement with the entire region.”

Putin further highlighted Russia’s backing of Malaysia’s desire to join BRICS as a partner country.

“I consider this a significant step that will benefit both our bilateral ties and the growth of BRICS itself. I know your country played an active role in the recent BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro,” he added.
