Putin: Russia supports the initiative to extend the EEU free trade agreement with Iran

27 May 2022

Russia supports the initiative to extend the temporary free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and Iran, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday at the session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.

He reminded that currently there are active talks on concluding a full-fledged free trade agreement, including with Iran, which is intended to replace the current temporary agreement. Its implementation has "noticeably affected" the trade turnover of the EEU with the Islamic Republic of Iran, Putin noted. According to the results of 2021, the turnover of goods increased by 73.5% to $5 billion, and the export from the EU increased 2.1 times to $3.4 billion, he pointed out.

"And in order to maintain the current preferential trade regime with Iran until a new free trade agreement is concluded, we support the decision to extend the temporary agreement," stressed the Russian president.

He also believes it would be advisable to intensify negotiations on the EEU free trade agreement with Egypt, to begin similar negotiations with Indonesia, and to study the issue of concluding a preferential trade agreement with the UAE.
