16 February

The Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA) and the leader of the consortium for the International Research Center based on the MBIR Reactor (IRC MBIR) have reached an agreement to cooperate in the field of peaceful nuclear energy. The partnership was announced by Rosatom’s press service following a strategic signing.

"The Arab Atomic Energy Agency and the leader of the IRC MBIR consortium have signed an agreement on strategic cooperation in the peaceful use of atomic energy," the statement read. "The document provides for collaboration in scientific research, personnel training, and infrastructure development, and is aimed at implementing specific joint projects."

Dr. Salem Hamdi, AAEA Director General, described the agreement as a vital step toward realizing the Arab Strategy for the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy, noting its potential to directly benefit the economies and quality of life in Arab nations. He highlighted several critical areas of focus:

"Our cooperation with IRC MBIR will help accelerate the project to create a regional radioactive waste management system, which is critical for environmental safety. Joint research on the MBIR reactor will provide us with new opportunities in the development and production of radiopharmaceuticals for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Furthermore, access to such research infrastructure provides professional expertise for training specialists at our future Specialized Arab Training Center and offers technological support to countries currently building their first nuclear power plants."

The Arab Atomic Energy Agency is a specialized scientific organization operating within the framework of the Arab League. Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Tunis, the AAEA focuses on nuclear sciences and their peaceful applications. It currently comprises 14 member states: Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Yemen, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, and Tunisia.
