State Corporation (SC) Rosatom is engaged in discussions with Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Myanmar, and several East Asian island states regarding the construction of small-scale nuclear power plants (NPPs), SC CEO Alexei Likhachev informed the State Duma.
Likhachev highlighted the significant demand for small NPPs, projecting the creation of 30–40 gigawatts of small-capacity NPPs worldwide within the next 10–15 years. He noted ongoing negotiations with Russian companies, including Nornickel, Gazpromneft, Lukoil, and Russian Platinum, for small NPP projects.
"Several countries are our partners and clients. We have already concluded intergovernmental agreements with some and are finalizing contracts. With others, we are still in the process of technical discussions and economic modeling," Likhachev stated.
He specified ongoing discussions with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, and various island states in Southeast Asia. In December 2023, Rosatom signed a memorandum of understanding with Mongolian company Mon-Atom, outlining plans for the construction of a low-capacity ground-based nuclear power plant in Mongolia.
