Russia and Uzbekistan Sign Agreements to Expand Cooperation in the Nuclear Sphere

26 September

During the Global Atomic Forum “World Atomic Week” in Moscow on September 26, Russia and Uzbekistan signed key documents aimed at expanding their collaboration in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, according to a statement by the Russian state corporation Rosatom.

The signing ceremony included participation from Andrey Rozhdestvin, General Director of JSC “Rosatom Energetic Projects,” and Abduzhamil Kalmuratov, head of the Directorate for the Construction of the Nuclear Power Plant in Uzbekistan.

The joint project envisages the construction of an integrated nuclear power complex in the Jizzakh region, combining two large-capacity power units along with two smaller ones rated at 55 MW each. The agreements include an addendum clarifying the configuration of the integrated power plant based on two VVER-1000 generation 3+ reactors alongside two RITM-200N small modular reactors.

Additionally, a contract outlining the main terms for nuclear fuel supplies for both the large-scale and small-scale nuclear reactors was signed.

This agreement builds upon a contract signed in May 2024 for the country's first small modular nuclear power plant, originally planned with six 55-MW reactors. The project has since evolved to include both large and small reactors, enhancing Uzbekistan’s energy capacity and modernization goals.
