Russia Ready to Offer Indonesia Large-Scale Nuclear Power Plants

15 April

Russia is ready to offer Indonesia large-scale nuclear power plants and small modular reactors for joint energy projects, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov told reporters.

“There is mutual interest in cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, taking into account Indonesia’s plans to expand this sector. For joint development in nuclear energy, Russia is ready to offer both high-capacity plants and small modular reactors,” Manturov said.

He highlighted that Russia’s flagship high-capacity technology is the VVER-1200 Generation III+ reactor, which meets the highest safety standards and is designed to withstand extreme external conditions such as floods, tsunamis, and earthquakes.

“The construction of a nuclear power plant in Indonesia would provide a major boost to the country's economy, education, and technological development. Every dollar invested in such a project could add nearly two dollars to Indonesia’s GDP. Beyond the economic and industrial benefits, a nuclear power plant would also contribute to Indonesia’s climate and environmental agenda,” Manturov emphasized.

Earlier this year, Russia’s Ministry of Energy reported that the two countries were exploring opportunities for joint energy projects, including nuclear and solar power development.
