Russia Supplied 84% of Tajikistan’s Petroleum Imports in 2025

06 February

Tajikistan’s petroleum imports reached over 1.21 million tons in 2025, valued at $959.3 million. This marks an increase of 162,000 tons compared to the total volume brought into the country in 2024, according to data released by the Antimonopoly Service under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.

During a press conference, agency leadership specified that Russia accounted for 84% of all petroleum products imported into Tajikistan last year. Other contributors included Uzbekistan at 5%, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan at 3% each, Belarus at 2.9%, and Kyrgyzstan at 0.5%.

The 2025 figures highlight a significant rise in diesel fuel imports, which totaled 628,500 tons worth $478.2 million — an increase of 126,100 tons over 2024 levels. Gasoline imports also grew, reaching 458,100 tons valued at $357.9 million, which is 7,300 tons higher than the previous year.

In contrast, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports saw a slight decline. In 2025, the country imported 349,900 tons for $238.8 million, down by 18,800 tons from 2024. Kazakhstan remained the primary source for LPG, providing 210,300 tons (60.1% of the total), while Russia supplied 139,000 tons (39.7%) and Turkmenistan provided 548 tons (0.2%).

Tajikistan remains heavily dependent on external energy supplies as domestic production is minimal. Data from the Ministry of Energy indicates that the republic produced just over 18,500 tons of oil in 2025 (up from 16,100 tons in 2024), which is insufficient to meet the needs of local refineries. Furthermore, natural gas production dropped by 115,000 cubic meters, totaling 247,000 cubic meters for the year.

Russia continues to be the cornerstone of Tajikistan's fuel security. The two nations operate under an intergovernmental agreement governing the supply of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other petroleum products. Each year, the countries coordinate indicative balances to account for the republic's economic growth. According to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Energy, the total volume of petroleum products and LPG imported from Russia in 2025 exceeded 1.2 million tons, representing a 17.5% year-on-year increase.
