09 December 2020

From December 10, tomatoes and apples from Azerbaijan will be prohibited to enter Russia. This was reported on the official site of Rosselkhoznadzor.

The agency stressed that it had repeatedly informed the Food Security Agency of Azerbaijan about pests found in imported products.
"Only in the period from October 22, 2020, to the present, 17 cases of detection of quarantine objects for the Eurasian Economic Union - South American tomato moth (Tuta absoluta (Povolny)) and Oriental foetus (Grapholita molesta (Busck)) were recorded, - in fruit and vegetable (tomatoes, apples)",  Rosselkhoznadzor reports.

The Service noted that such restrictive measure is aimed at preservation of phytosanitary well-being (protection of human, animal and plant environment, where there are no quarantine pests. - ed).

"In order to prevent the import and spread of these pests on the territory of the Russian Federation Rosselkhoznadzor has to prohibit the import of tomatoes and apples of Azerbaijani origin into Russia from December 10, 2020" - explained the department.

Azerbaijan is known as quite large supplier of plant products to Russia. The country took the first place in supply of fresh and chilled tomatoes. The Federal Customs Service cites data according to which their import in the previous year was 172.359 thousand tons. This represents about 30.9 percent of the total supply of these products.
