Russian wheat exports to Bangladesh have surged significantly, with shipments reaching a record 3.5 million tons in the 2023-2024 crop year, marking a 2.5-fold increase compared to the previous year, Ruslan Hasanov, Director of the Grain Quality Assessment Center (GQAC), said.
"Russia exported a record 3.5 million tons of wheat to Bangladesh in 2023-2024, which accounted for more than half of all wheat imports to the country during this period. This represents a substantial increase from the 1.4 million tons exported in the 2022-2023 crop year," TASS quoted Hasanov as saying.
He also noted that the rise in wheat exports has been accompanied by increased shipments of other agricultural products. Exports of peas jumped nearly 44 times to 206,400 tons, while mustard seed exports grew more than tenfold to 24,500 tons. Additionally, barley, which Russia exported to Bangladesh for the first time in 2024, shows promise for future growth.
Hasanov highlighted that corn and vegetable oil also present significant opportunities for Russian exports to Bangladesh. The country, a major net importer of food and agricultural raw materials, is now among the top five importers of Russian wheat, along with Algeria and Kazakhstan.
