The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has reaffirmed its support for a transparent, inclusive, and non-discriminatory global trade system, emphasizing the central role of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The move comes in response to the escalating trade tensions and widespread tariff hikes introduced by US President Donald Trump.
In a statement released by its press service, the SCO stressed the importance of open and equitable multilateral trade and reaffirmed the commitment of its member states to strengthen the global economy. “SCO countries are determined to preserve and reinforce the multilateral trade system, with the WTO at its core, to effectively address current global trade challenges,” the statement reads.
The organization also highlighted the need for keeping global supply chains resilient, inclusive, and diversified, adding that discussions on development issues within the WTO remain vital.
Trump recently announced sweeping tariffs on imports from 185 countries and territories, introducing a universal 10% tariff on April 5, with specific tariffs beginning April 9. While he temporarily suspended tariff increases for 75 nations that showed willingness to negotiate—leaving them under the 10% rate—he sharply raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%, escalating tensions further with Beijing.
