Trade turnover between Russia and Iran exceeded $4 billion in 10 months

05 December 2022

Trade turnover between Russia and Iran in January - October 2022 exceeded the volume of trade between the countries in 2021, amounting to more than $4 billion, reported  Izvestia  with reference to the Federal Customs Service.

According to Deputy Head of the Federal Customs Service Vladimir Ivin, exports increased by 27% and imports by 10%.

President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation Sergey Katyrin told Izvestia that the main reason for the growth of mutual trade is the Western sanctions against Russia and the resulting disruption of traditional ties. He also said that Iran is of special interest: first, it is a logistical bridge in trade with the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, and second, the state has a unique experience of many years of survival under sanctions.

"Undoubtedly, the temporary free trade agreement between the EEU and Iran, in force since October 27, 2019, contributes to the growth of trade operations. A protocol to extend it was signed in early 2022. Negotiations on a full-fledged agreement were launched, four rounds of consultations took place," Katyrin noted.

The publication sent an inquiry to the Ministry of economic development.
