Turkey and Gazprom are negotiating to increase gas supplies to the country, the Turkish Stream gas pipeline in 2022 with 9.75 billion cubic meters of uncontracted capacity, Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey Alparslan Bayraktar told reporters on the sidelines of the International Oil and Gas Exhibition ADIPEC-2021.
"We are in talks with Gazprom to increase gas supplies to Turkey because Turkish Stream has 9.75 billion cubic meters of gas capacity that is not contracted in 2022," he said.
Bayraktar added that Turkey expects to supply more than 20 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia by the end of 2021. "I am sure that Gazprom wants to sell more gas to Turkey. Turkey needs gas. This is an ideal combination," the deputy minister said.
In late July, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak reported that Russia and Turkey were negotiating a long-term agreement on gas transit. Later, Bayraktar noted that the country is discussing new gas supply contracts with different countries, including Russia.
Russia supplies gas to Turkey via two pipelines across the Black Sea. Blue Stream was put into operation at the end of 2002, its design capacity is 16 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The Turkish Stream export pipeline consists of two strings, one of which is designed to supply gas to Turkish consumers, the second - to supply gas to Southern and South-Eastern Europe. The total capacity of Turkish Stream is 31.5 billion cubic meters, its operation began in January 2020.
