Turkmenistan Advocates for Expanding Energy Supply Routes Within and Beyond the CIS

09 October

Turkmenistan is calling for the expansion of energy supply volumes and routes across the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and beyond, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said during his address at the CIS Heads of State Council meeting in Moscow on Tuesday.

"In the energy sector, Turkmenistan supports increasing both the volume and geographical reach of energy supplies across the CIS and beyond. This applies to both raw energy resources and electricity," Berdimuhamedov was quoted as saying by the official newspaper Neytralny Turkmenistan.

The president also emphasized the importance of creating favorable conditions within the CIS for the development of a "green" economy. He advocated for the formation of economic and industrial clusters centered around low-carbon energy. "This is a promising goal, but we must start working toward it now by leveraging the significant scientific and technological potential available in our countries, and by fostering conditions for joint research and practical cooperation," he added.

On the topic of international cooperation, Berdimuhamedov urged the CIS, as a partner of the United Nations, to work toward strengthening the global organization. He emphasized the need to support and unite member states around the UN Charter while resisting attempts to undermine or discredit the organization. He also pointed to the importance of collectively addressing new challenges and threats, such as cybercrime, the unlawful use of digital platforms, and biological dangers. "I believe that our countries need to adopt more proactive, coordinated, and structured approaches to these issues, developing mechanisms to protect against attempts to destabilize governmental institutions and public life. We must also work actively to prevent the infiltration of radical elements seeking to sow discord and intolerance," said the president.

Turkmenistan is a key player in the Asian oil and gas market, with hydrocarbon resources estimated at over 71 billion tons of oil equivalent (more than 20 billion tons of oil and over 50 trillion cubic meters of natural gas). The country ranks fourth in the world in proven natural gas reserves, after Russia, Iran, and Qatar.
