The upgraded heavy transport aircraft IL-76 is generating significant interest among potential buyers in the Middle East and East Asia, Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Anton Alikhanov told TASS during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
"Following successful presentations of the modernized IL-76MD-90A in Dubai and Saudi Arabia, we've seen growing interest from partners in the Gulf region, the broader Middle East, and East Asia," Alikhanov said.
He explained that while the IL-76MD-90A retains the outward appearance of the classic IL-76, it is essentially a new aircraft featuring major enhancements. The updated model boasts new engines, advanced avionics, state-of-the-art onboard systems, and an improved wing and landing gear.
“These upgrades make the IL-76MD-90A a unique offering on the heavy ramp cargo aircraft market — it’s not only more efficient but also fully capable of operating on international air routes and from virtually any major airport,” Alikhanov emphasized.
The IL-76 family is already well known internationally. Over 100 IL-76TD aircraft and their various modifications are currently in commercial service around the world.
According to Alikhanov, the aircraft’s manufacturer, Ilyushin (IL), is in talks with potential operators both in Russia and abroad. "The IL-76MD-90A is especially appealing to airlines that already operate aircraft from the Ilyushin family," he said.
