The National Electricity Company of Afghanistan (DABS) said on Thursday that electricity supplies from Uzbekistan have normalized, according to a notification on the company's website.
"As of 7 a.m., electricity imports from Uzbekistan have returned to normal values," DABS said. The company recalled that on Wednesday the Uzbek side "without prior notice reduced the export of electricity to Afghanistan by 60%." This was due to technical problems at the Marjan power plant.
DABS, however, warned that despite the restoration of supplies, the country will still "experience power outages due to shortages and due to overloading of networks."
Afghanistan gets most of its electricity from Central Asian countries, particularly Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Because of this heavy dependence on imports and supply disruptions, the country experiences regular power outages during peak consumption seasons.
