Expert: Raisi's Death Will Not Affect Development of Russia-Iran Relations

20 May

Iran's policy towards Russia will remain unchanged despite the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian in a helicopter crash. Russian-Iranian relations are stable and friendly, according to Boris Dolgov, a leading researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, who shared his insights with TASS.

"This tragic death will not, in my opinion, lead to any changes and will not affect relations between Iran and Russia, as these relations are steadily developing in terms of cooperation," Dolgov stated.

Dolgov emphasized that two scenarios need to be considered given the circumstances of the crash. "First, if this tragic event is the result of a helicopter malfunction or a technical issue, new leaders will be elected and will likely continue the same policies that Iran's previous leaders pursued," he explained.

"But if this tragic death is the result of a terrorist attack – it is difficult to talk about it now and we can't confirm it until the investigation is complete – then, of course, both domestic and foreign policies may change, and appropriate measures will be taken," - he said. - "This could lead to a radicalization of the situation in the region, but it is too early to draw conclusions. We need to wait for the investigation results to understand the full picture."
