Lavrov Calls for Addressing Root Causes of Ukraine Crisis, Building New World Order

16 July

UN Security Council President and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov urged the international community to address the fundamental causes of the Ukrainian crisis, emphasizing the need to remove Western threats against Russia as part of a lasting solution.

During a ministerial debate on "Multilateral cooperation for the formation of a more just, democratic and sustainable world order," Lavrov outlined a series of steps to "restore trust and stabilize the international situation."

"First and foremost, we must definitively eliminate the root causes of the unfolding crisis in Europe," Lavrov said. He reiterated Russian President Vladimir Putin's previously stated conditions for sustainable peace in Ukraine, highlighting that a political and diplomatic resolution must include concrete actions to remove threats to Russia from the West and the Euro-Atlantic region.

Lavrov underscored the importance of considering the "new geostrategic realities" in Eurasia when developing mutual guarantees and agreements. He cautioned that Europe risks falling behind the creation of a continent-wide architecture for equal and indivisible security. "We are ready to seek a balance of interests," he affirmed.

Turning to the broader vision of a just world order, Lavrov stressed the necessity of restoring regional and global balance while actively addressing global economic inequities.

"In a multipolar world, there can be no monopolists in monetary and financial regulation, trade, or technology," Lavrov stated. He echoed the sentiments of the majority of the global community, emphasizing the urgency of reforming the Bretton Woods institutions and the World Trade Organization to reflect the true weight of non-Western growth and development centers.
