Lavrov: West will continue to foster Kiev's neo-Nazi sentiments at Crimean platform

12 August 2021

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called the planned meeting of the " Crimean platform" initiated by Ukraine a coven, where the West will develop Kiev's neo-Nazi sentiments.

"Another coven, the "Crimean Platform," will take place in a week, where the West will continue to peddle the neo-Nazi, racist sentiments of the modern Ukrainian government," the minister said on Thursday at a meeting with participants in the Tavrida art cluster.

Lavrov also called disgraceful the position of the West, which encouraged the coup in Kiev, according to which accusations of Moscow's alleged annexation of Crimea began to be heard. "Since then, you see what has been happening to the Russian language in Ukraine, how they have tried in every way to insult the free expression of the will of the people of Crimea," he added.

The creation of the "Crimean Platform" was initiated by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to coordinate efforts at the international level to return the peninsula to the jurisdiction of Ukraine. The work of the platform should begin with the so-called inaugural summit on August 23.

After the coup d'état in Ukraine in February 2014, the Crimean and Sevastopol authorities held a referendum on reunification with Russia. More than 80 percent of those eligible to vote participated, with 96.7 percent and 95.6 percent voting in favor of reunification, respectively. On March 18, 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the treaty accepting the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol into the Russian Federation, and the document was ratified by the Federal Assembly on March 21. Despite the convincing results of the referendum, Kiev refused to recognize Crimea as part of Russia.
