Putin Extends Congratulations to Sheikh Hasina on Reappointment as Prime Minister of Bangladesh

12 January

Russian President Vladimir Putin has conveyed warm congratulations to Sheikh Hasina, the leader of Bangladesh's ruling Awami League party, on her fifth appointment as the country's Prime Minister. In a congratulatory letter sent to the head of the South Asian nation, Putin expressed hope that Hasina's leadership would further enhance the constructive bilateral cooperation between Russia and Bangladesh.

"Russia-Bangladesh relations traditionally develop in the spirit of friendship. We hope your activity as the head of the government will further contribute to strengthening constructive bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of our countries," Bangladesh's national news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) quoted excerpts from the letter.

Putin also extended his wishes for Hasina's success, good health, and prosperity.

Sheikh Hasina, who took the prime ministerial oath in Dhaka on Thursday, secured her position following the parliamentary elections on January 7. Her party, the Awami League, won 222 out of 298 available seats in the unicameral parliament, marking her fifth term as Prime Minister and fourth consecutive term.

Russia and Bangladesh are actively cooperating in the international arena and developing a bilateral partnership. Rosatom is constructing Ruppur, Bangladesh's first Russian-designed nuclear power plant. In September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Dhaka. In November, a detachment of Russian ships, including two large anti-submarine ships from the Russian Pacific Fleet, "Admiral Tributs" and "Admiral Panteleyev," along with the tanker "Pechenga," visited the port of Chittagong for the first time in half a century. Food supplies from the Russian Federation are growing, and trade turnover is increasing.
