Moscow considers the steps proposed by Beijing for a peaceful resolution in Ukraine to be realistic and constructive, but these initiatives do not find support from Kiev and the West, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with Xinhua, the text of which was published on the Kremlin’s website.
"We positively evaluate China’s approaches to resolving the Ukrainian crisis. Beijing understands its root causes and its global geopolitical significance very well," Putin said, noting that this was reflected in China’s plan for a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis published in February 2023. The Russian leader emphasized that "the ideas and proposals documented indicate our Chinese friends' sincere desire to contribute to stabilizing the situation."
The Russian president added that the additional four principles for conflict resolution recently expressed by Chinese President Xi Jinping naturally complement this plan.
"The realistic and constructive steps proposed by Beijing—to achieve peace through renouncing selfish interests and constant escalation, minimizing the conflict's negative impact on the global economy, and ensuring the stability of global supply chains—develop ideas on overcoming the Cold War mentality, the indivisibility of security, adherence to international law, and the UN Charter in their entirety and interrelation. These could form the basis of a political-diplomatic process that considers Russia’s security concerns and promotes the establishment of a long-term and sustainable peace," Putin noted.
Unfortunately, the Russian president continued, "these initiatives do not find support either in Ukraine or among its Western patrons."
"They are not ready for an equal, honest, and open dialogue based on mutual respect and consideration of each other's interests. They do not want to discuss the root causes and origins of today's global crisis, of which the situation around Ukraine is one of the dramatic manifestations," concluded the Russian president, noting that it was Western policy in recent years and decades that led to the current global upheavals.
