Putin said that geopolitical processes in the world are becoming more and more turbulent

The turbulence of geopolitical processes in the world is growing, despite some positive signals, and the erosion of international law continues, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave this assessment of the situation in a video address to the participants and guests of the 9 Moscow Conference on International Security published on the Kremlin website on Wednesday.

"Unfortunately, geopolitical processes are becoming increasingly turbulent despite isolated positive signals.  The erosion of international law continues as well. The attempts to use force to push through one’s own interests and to strengthen one’s own security at the expense of the security of others continue unabated," the Russian leader stated.

He noted that the strengthening of global security and sustainable development of civilization "depends on the solution of the most important issues of today's military-political agenda and on the efficient search for effective and joint responses to common challenges".

"Regional armed conflicts, the risks of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the activity of cross-border criminal groups, drug trafficking and cybercriminals are causing us serious concern," Putin continued. "International terrorism continues to pose a particular threat," the Russian president added.

He concluded that the scale and the global nature of the above challenges require that all states join their efforts, and this collective work must be based on international law and the UN Charter goals and principles.

"Any "new rules" should be formulated under the auspices of the UN. All other avenues will lead to chaos and unpredictability," Putin said. He noted that since the UN has been and remains the foundation of the international relations system, and the main task of this authoritative and internationally recognized organization is "to prevent a global conflict, a new world war."

Promotion of peace and stability

Russia intends to continue promoting the de-escalation of regional conflicts and strengthening peace and stability on the continent, it never forgets its responsibility for the security and prosperity of neighboring countries, the president said.

Russia never forgets its responsibility for the security and prosperity of neighboring countries, with which we are brought together by inextricable historical, cultural and human ties," he said.

The head of state called the settlement of the regional conflict is an important aspect of efforts to ensure global security. Russia actively contributes to this, he pointed out.

"Our military aid helped to liberate the greater part of Syrian territory from international terrorists and to prevent the disintegration of the Syrian state, and political and diplomatic work within the Astana format that is pursued jointly with Turkey and Iran has made it possible to start the process of Syrian settlement under the UN aegis," recalled the Russian leader.

The Russian president concluded by wishing the conference participants fruitful work, expressing confidence that interesting discussions awaited them, and that "proposals and initiatives will serve to strengthen international security and stability."

The IX Moscow Conference on International Security, organized by the Russian Defense Ministry, is taking place June 23-24. More than 600 guests are participating.
