Russia has taken over the presidency of the UN Security Council for the month. The last time Russia coordinated the work of this key structure of the world organization was in April 2023.
The first meeting under Russia's leadership will be held on Monday morning, New York time, to approve the Security Council's work program for the coming month. Following this, Russian Permanent Representative Vasily Nebenzya will hold a press conference and a closed briefing for UN General Assembly member states.
Key events during Russia's presidency are expected in mid-month, focusing on topics such as building a more just, democratic, and sustainable world order, the Middle East settlement, and UN cooperation with the CSTO, CIS, and Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov mentioned that the latter topic has garnered support, with CSTO Secretary-General Imangali Tasmagambetov invited to speak at the meeting. Additionally, Nebenzya has indicated that the issue of Ukraine's attack on Sevastopol's civilian infrastructure with ATACMS tactical missiles equipped with cluster warheads will be discussed at an upcoming Security Council meeting.
Throughout the month, the UN Security Council will hold around two dozen public meetings and closed consultations.
The Security Council consists of 15 members, including five permanent members—Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States—each holding veto power. The 10 temporary members are Algeria, Ecuador, Guyana, Malta, Japan, Mozambique, Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and Switzerland. As mandated by the UN Charter, the Security Council is responsible for maintaining peace and international security, with all UN member states required to comply with its decisions.
The presidency of the Security Council rotates monthly among its members in alphabetical order by their English names. In June, the Republic of Korea held the presidency, and Sierra Leone will take over in August.
