Russia departs 10 US embassy employees

21 April 2021

US Deputy Ambassador Bart Gorman was given a note on Wednesday to declare persona non grata 10 staff members of the US Embassy in Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

These employees of the embassy are to leave Russian territory by the end of May 21. The diplomatic mission called the measure a mirror response to the hostile actions of the American side against some employees of the Russian embassy in Washington and the Consulate General of Russia in New York, who were groundlessly declared persona non grata.

Russia will take further steps in the near future to respond to the US anti-Russian sanctions, the Foreign Ministry assured. It recalled that a package of response measures to the latest wave of "illegal anti-Russian sanctions by the United States" was announced in a statement by the ministry on April 16.

April 15, US President Joe Biden signed an order imposing sanctions against Russia. In particular, the United States prohibits its companies to directly purchase Russian debt issued by the Central Bank, the National Welfare Fund or the RF Ministry of Finance after June 14, 2021. The US is also deporting 10 diplomats working at the Russian embassy in Washington, DC, among whom, according to the US side, there are "representatives of the Russian intelligence services".
