Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko affirmed Russia's unwavering support for the priorities outlined during Kazakhstan's chairmanship in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
"We consistently endorse Kazakhstan's priorities in its chairmanship. These proposals aim to strengthen the SCO and enhance its active international engagement," stated Rudenko during a round table discussion focused on Astana's leadership within the SCO.
Rudenko underscored Russia's commitment to providing comprehensive assistance in the substantive preparations for the upcoming Astana summit. He highlighted that the consolidated approaches of SCO member states towards organizational development, as well as pressing global and regional issues, will be reflected in the political declaration currently under development by leaders.
On SCO modernization
The deputy minister highlighted ongoing efforts towards modernizing the SCO, in line with decisions made by SCO leaders in 2021 and 2022. Under Kazakhstan's chairmanship, proposals for modernization are being formulated, taking into account existing initiatives.
"While numerous initiatives are on the table, the primary objective is to inject new dynamics and enhance the quality of SCO cooperation, aligning with contemporary geopolitical realities," emphasized the deputy minister. "Achieving this goal will necessitate comprehensive measures to further enhance the functioning of SCO bodies, bolster mechanisms for addressing security challenges and threats, and reformat cooperation with partners."
About the organization
Established in 2001 in Shanghai, the SCO comprises Russia, Iran, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan. Afghanistan, Belarus, and Mongolia serve as observers, while another 14 states engage as dialogue partners.
SCO member states collaborate across various domains, including economy, energy, science, culture, transport infrastructure development, and counterterrorism efforts.
Kazakhstan holds the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization from July 5, 2023, to June 2024.
