Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Maria Zabolotskaya expressed confidence that the number of countries supporting the adoption of a resolution on combating the glorification of Nazism in the UN General Assembly will continue to grow, during a conversation with journalists.
On Tuesday, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled "Combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance", 118 countries supported the document. "The dynamics we have are positive," -Zabolotskaya said. - "We are moving forward, maybe not as fast as we would like it to be, but we will really be gaining year by year, that dynamic is consistently positive."
Zabolotskaya emphasized that the resolution addresses not only the fight against the glorification of Nazism itself but also addresses "all neo-Nazi practices, which take various forms, including xenophobia and Islamophobia." "It is acknowledged that this resolution holds significance for everyone," she stated, pointing out that only the US and European countries consistently express a negative stance towards this document. The diplomat also mentioned that on Tuesday, Russia submitted a report to UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ilse Brands Kegris, prepared by the Russian Foreign Ministry, titled "On the situation with glorification of Nazism, spread of neo-Nazism, and other practices that contribute to fuelling of contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance."
The draft resolution on combating the glorification of Nazism, co-authored by Russia with countries including Belarus and Syria, is annually submitted to the UN General Assembly for a vote. It condemns incidents of glorification and propaganda of Nazism, supports efforts to preserve historical truth, recommends measures against denial of crimes against humanity, revision of history, and the outcome of World War II. Additionally, the resolution unequivocally condemns denial or attempted denial of the Holocaust, along with manifestations of religious intolerance, incitement, persecution, or violence based on ethnicity or religious beliefs.
On November 3, the draft resolution on combating the glorification of Nazism was voted on in the Third Committee of the UNGA. During the voting, an amendment proposed by some states, including Australia, Albania, and Japan, was adopted. The amendment includes a paragraph expressing "concern" about the mention of the fight against neo-Nazism as one of the reasons for the special military operation in Ukraine. Kyiv co-sponsored this amendment.
