UN Secretary-General calls "vaccine nationalism" an unfair and failed strategy

22 September 2020

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday sharply condemned the desire of some countries to get coronavirus vaccines only for their own use.

"We work for the development of medicines and treatments as a global public good and support efforts to create an affordable "people's vaccine" for people around the world," the Secretary-General said at the General political debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly.

"At the same time, according to reports, some countries enter into shadow deals [for the supply of vaccines] exclusively for their own populations," he said, naming specific states. According to him, "such "vaccine nationalism" is not only not fair, but also doomed to failure." "None of us will be safe until all of us are safe," he added.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 31.3 million people have been infected worldwide, and about 965,000  died. In Russia, according to the Federal operational headquarters for the fight against the coronavirus, 1,115,810 cases of infection were registered, 917,949 people recovered, and 19,649 died.
