Primakov: Islamic Nations Seeking Cooperation with Russia

22 May

Russia's integration with the international community is evident as countries from the Islamic world seek collaboration with it. Yevgeny Primakov, the Head of Rossotrudnichestvo, said during an interview with TASS.

"People are naturally drawn to Russia, so the notion of isolating it is simply unfathomable," he remarked. Primakov highlighted the recent "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum," an economic summit held in Kazan, which saw significant participation from foreign dignitaries. He underscored how such events underscored Russia's natural affinity with Islamic nations, particularly through city-to-city relations.

"Relations with the Islamic world provide fertile ground for such connections. Historically, the Islamic world transcended national boundaries. The Ummah, the 'dar al-Islam,' encompass territories of Islam irrespective of nation-states. States emerged later. Inter-city relations have always been intrinsic to the Islamic world," - explained the agency's head. - "This forum format is particularly conducive to fostering such collaborations."

Primakov highlighted the forum's focus on fostering sister city relationships, forging contacts, and fostering joint initiatives. He emphasized that Rossotrudnichestvo is committed to these objectives. "It's crucial that these ties extend beyond mere formalities, where city leaders meet, exchange pleasantries, and depart. What truly matters is the exchange of technologies, knowledge, and joint projects spanning public utilities, transportation, social welfare, and more. This lends substance and significance to these partnerships," he clarified.

"Kazan serves as an exemplary model for this approach. For instance, Kazan's sister city is Istanbul. We're aware of the significant endeavors undertaken by Mr. Ilsur Metshin, the Mayor of Kazan, in collaboration with his Turkish counterparts in Istanbul," Primakov concluded.

Addressing global interest in Russia, Primakov highlighted a recent gathering of young diplomats from the Islamic world under the stewardship of Konstantin Kolpakov, who heads the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Council of Young Diplomats.
