President of Mauritania Mohamed Ould Ghazouani appointed Mohamed Ould Bilal as the new Prime Minister of the country, Sky News Arabia reports.
Bilal replaced Prime Minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Sidiya, who resigned with the government earlier on Thursday.
The reasons for the change of Prime Minister and Cabinet are still unclear. Mohamed Ould Bilal, 57, is a veteran of Mauritanian politics and has held many government positions.
The day before, the Prosecutor's office of Mauritania received a report from a parliamentary commission that examined the results of the previous President of the Republic, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz (2008-2019). An official investigation is expected to be conducted. Abdel Aziz himself refused to cooperate with the parliamentary commission.
In July of this year, the Mauritanian Parliament passed a law creating a High court to try the head of state and Ministers if they are found to be involved in "national treason". We are talking about the fate of oil revenues, the sale of state property, and food purchases.
