12 August 2020

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has removed Ambassador to Russia Latif Bahand from his post, the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Wednesday.

According to the agency, whose statement was quoted by the Afghan Pajhwok Agency, the Foreign Ministry dismissed the Ambassador on the basis of an oral order from the President. The reasons for this are not reported.

Mukhtar Humayun has been appointed interim Ambassador of Afghanistan to Russia.

Pajhwok notes that Bahand's appointment as Ambassador to Moscow in October 2018 was seen as a good sign. Three months ago, Ghani praised his work. "A good example of our cultural diplomacy is Russia, where our Ambassador has created an atmosphere of reliable bilateral cooperation and ties," he said. In the current letter of resignation of Bahand, the President also spoke highly of him.

Bahand, Pajhwok notes, "for the first time in the history of diplomatic relations between Kabul and Moscow, perfectly represented Afghanistan in the field of politics and diplomacy."
