The flagship universities of Rosatom are ready to open educational programs in Egypt to meet the needs of El Dabaa NPP, which is being built by the state corporation. This was reported on Friday by Rosatom's press service following the visit of a Russian delegation to Egypt.
"The Russian delegation visited Egypt to discuss the opening of branches of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI and St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University LETI at Borg El Arab Technological University in Alexandria. <...> The flagship universities of the state corporation are ready to open programs in the field of nuclear technology, energy, information technology, mechatronics, electronics, demanded in the Egyptian labor market," says the report. A total of 18 higher educational institutions from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Yekaterinburg, Ivanovo, Kazan, Nizhniy Novgorod, Sevastopol and Tomsk are members of the Rosatom consortium of the flagship universities.
The El Dabaa NPP - the first nuclear power plant in Egypt. The NPP is being built in Matrouh Province on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, about 300 km northwest of Cairo. The plant will consist of four 1,200 MW units each with VVER-1200 (water-cooled water-moderated power reactors) generation III+. Construction of the first two power units began in 2022. At the beginning of May 2023, the first concrete was poured into the foundation of Unit 3. According to the contractual obligations, the Russian party will not only build the power plant, but will also supply Russian nuclear fuel for the entire life cycle of the plant as well as assist the Egyptian partners in personnel training and support in the operation and maintenance of the plant during its first 10 years of operation. As part of another agreement, the Russian side will build a special storage facility and supply containers for storing spent nuclear fuel.
